Instructions for the PIPOLINO®-XXL

Introduction

The PIPOLINO®-XXL is specifically intended for horses and ponies weighing over 250 kilos.

Usage of the PIPOLINO®-XL is reserved for the use of foals, donkeys, ponies, and horses weighing less than 250 kilos (for miniature ponies use the PIPOLINO®-L).

Instructions for the PIPOLINO®-XL are identical to those of the PIPOLINO®-XXL.

Initial use

The key located under the filling plug allows you to tighten (without blocking) the screw intended for the selection of the opening of gauges for the distribution of the feed. Once unscrewed, it allows you to dismantle the PIPOLINO®-XXL, and clean the inside.
Care: In order to prevent the accidental ingestion of the key, remove it from its housing once the opening is set, and place it in a secure location.

The procedure adopted will depend on the animal’s behaviour. If the animal frequently scrapes the PIPOLINO®-XXL with its front hooves, it is recommended to delay the reduction of the feed debit.

The animal will right away know how to use the PIPOLINO®-XXL; it is therefore not necessary or advisable to roll the PIPOLINO®-XXL in front of it.

Skittish or insatiable horses

The use of a trough or bucket with a diameter >50 cm and a height >30 is strongly recommended during the animal’s adaptation to the use of the PIPOLINO®-XXL.

  • Set the opening to position 8 depending on the composition and size of the feed
  • Fill the PIPOLINO®-XXL based on the following procedure, and place it in the middle of a trough on the floor:
    • 1st week: ½ the ration in the PIPOLINO®-XXL and the other ½ in the bottom of the trough
    • 2nd week: ¾ of the ration in the PIPOLINO®-XXL and ¼ in the bottom of the trough
    • 3rd week: the entire ration in the PIPOLINO®-XXL
  • After the 4th week gradually reduce the number of openings depending on the length of the feeding time required.
  • Should the volume of the feed be greater than that of the PIPOLINO®-XXL (5.4 litres), subsequently offer the excess in the PIPOLINO®-XXL as a second helping.

Other animals

Although the use of the PIPOLINO®-XXL is recommended in a trough or bucket, it may none the less be placed directly on the ground in the paddock, with the risk of it rolling out of the enclosure

  • Place the feed in the PIPOLINO®-XXL and make it available to the animal
  • 1st week: set the opening to position 8 depending on the composition and size of the feed.
  • 2nd week: set the opening to 4
  • From the 3rd week onwards gradually reduce the number of openings depending on the length of the feeding time required.
  • Should the volume of the feed be greater than that of the PIPOLINO®-XXL (5.4 liters), subsequently offer the excess in the PIPOLINO®-XXL as a second helping.
Care: ensure that sufficient water is made available to satisfy demand

Settings:

By gradually reducing the number and size of openings, the animal is occupied for longer and feeds more slowly, thus avoiding boredom and favouring digestion.

Selecting the shape of the feed release holes

Represented by pictographs, the various openings are indicated on the outer rim of the cylindrical section. The opening will be selected so as to allow gradual release of small quantities, depending on the size and composition of the feed being used

Selecting the number of holes

There are 4 “number of holes” settings: 8, 4, 2, and 1, corresponding to the numbers shown inside the guide marks above.

Setting 8 is primarily for use during the horse’s initiation period, and the definitive settings (4, 2, and 1) will depend on the desired time of ingestion, and the nature and makeup of the feed being used.

Place the desired pictograph (size and number of openings) against the cursor located besides the locking screw, which may need to be tightened to secure the selected position

Accessories

Utilisation directly on the ground, except in a paddock equipped with a border which is able to stop the PIPOLINO®-XXL from rolling beyond its limits, generates the possibility of loss of feed in the straw as well as of soiling by manure.

Ideally the distributer should be placed in a round trough or bucket fixed in a corner of the box, or in the centre of the paddock or field

Recommended dimensions: diameter > 40 cm, height 25 to 40 cm, (for skittish or insatiable horses: d >50 cm, h > 30 cm).

The footprint of the trough in a corner of the box, does not, based on experience, constitute a hindrance even if the box is small or when the horse lies down in it.

Société PIPOLINO proposes the PIPOLINO®-CORNER trough for use in a box or paddock, and the MASTELLONE trough blocked by the PIPOLINO®-BOX locating ring for distinction in the paddock

PIPOLINO®-CORNER:

The PIPOLINO®-CORNER is a trough made of high resistance plastic suitable for contact with food, which is UV resistant, manufactured in the Europe and ISO 9001-2000 compliant, with a diameter of 62 cm, a height of 30 cm, and a weight of 3.6 kg.

It is intended for a box, and can be fixed in a corner. It has a footprint of less than 0.5 m².

MASTELLONE + PIPOLINO®-BOX:

The trough allows the horse to roll the PIPOLINO®-XXL in it. It is supplied with an aesthetic fixing device the PIPOLINO®-BOX.

The PIPOLINO®-BOX is an aesthetic combination of 8 hollow sections with lids, which connect with one another, to be weighed down by filling with sand or water (about 130 liters), designed to surround the MASTELLONE thus preventing the horse from moving it.

Made of high resistance plastic suitable for contact with food, it is UV resistant, manufactured in the Europe, and ISO 9001-2000 compliant. The overall dimensions are: external D. 115 cm, internal D. 85, height 30 cm, weight 14.4 kg.

Your PIPOLINO®-XXL comprises 2 independent concentric cylinders, one imbricated in the other, each with an assortment of openings, which allow rotation to achieve variable debits of feed.

There are 4 basic settings 8, 4, 2, and 1, with setting 1 providing the smallest debit (1 opening). The setting mark allows you to select the required debit. The selection of the diameter of the openings is represented by the pictographs ranging from a full moon (maximum diameter) to a quarter moon (minimum diameter), with intermediate settings (3/4 moon, and half-moon).

The diameter of the openings is 17.5 mm. Ensure that the croquettes being used fit freely through the selected openings.

Recommendations & restrictions

Société PIPOLINO declines all responsibility for damages resulting from the non-compliance with these instructions.

Recommendations

The PIPOLINO®-XXL may be used with any type of croquettes on condition that their diameter is 17.5 mm or smaller.

For weak or skinny horses, the debit will be set to ensure total ingestion of the ration in a slightly reduced time in order to allow for longer sleeping periods.

The PIPOLINO®-XXL is no substitute for grazing, but may facilitate the feeding transition when the grass is growing and too short, or when there is none. In the absence of grass, the PIPOLINO®-XXL combined with hay, provides the only dietary alternative for the well-being and health of the horse.

Care: the use PIPOLINO®-XXL does not dispense with the obligation to provide the horse with sufficient daily activity to safeguard its health and wellbeing.
Maintenance:
Ensure the cleanliness of the PIPOLINO®-XXL on a daily basis. A regular complete cleansing is recommended.

Unscrew the securing lock, separate the 2 cylinders, wash with a soap solution, rinse and dry. Reassemble the various parts.

Gestation and lactation:

The frequency and length of feeds should not be restricted during gestation and lactation. The quantity of feed may be increased during lactation compared to normal feeds, depending on requirements.
